ACH transfers: the batch system behind many bill pays

ACH moves money in batches between banks. It is common for paychecks, utility bills and account-to-account transfers.

The short version

  1. ACH is usually cheaper than wires but not instant.
  2. Authorization can be one-time or recurring.
  3. Cutoff times affect when money posts.

Batch processing

Banks send ACH files on a schedule, which is why posting is not immediate.

Authorizations

A written or electronic OK lets a company pull or push funds.

Returns

Insufficient funds or bad account numbers can send a payment back.

Questions for your bank

Ask about same-day ACH options and fees if timing matters.
